Lifelong Learning Questionnaire.docx
Exercise 1.2
Lifelong learning is a process that begins now, while I am a student. I am starting to build a base for my social work knowledge through my coursework, internships, and discussions with my professors and peers. The rapid changes in technology have made it so easy to become a lifelong learner. I can simply go on the internet, and search for peer reviewed articles to enhance my knowledge on particular social issues. This will be incredibly helpful if I am working with a client who has a disability, or is being affected by an issue that I am not familiar with.
There are various competencies that social workers should have that can be aided by becoming a lifelong learner. Empathy is essential for all social workers. By having access to a wealth of professional literature, and by learning on a consistent basis, I will be able to put myself in my client’s shoes and understand what they are going through more effectively. Another is competence. Knowing how easy it is to access information, staying competent on various social work fields is now easier than ever. Another competency is to engage in ethical practice. With the wealth of technological advances in recent history has also come a wealth of ethical dilemmas. By being a lifelong learner, I can continue to learn what is ethical, and what is not. In doing so, I can become better, more knowledgeable practitioner.
