"The Sources, Types, Effects, and Solutions of Pollution" Unit

This science unit plan reflects backwards design.  The first part of the plan lists content standards.  These content standards form the basis for the overarching and topical essential questions.  The questions, which relate to the general concept that human actions impact the surrounding environment, will guide students through the unit and its lessons.  These questions are also constructed to address students' misconceptions.  Additionally, the first part of the unit plan includes specific measurable skills that students must demonstrate by the unit's completion.  The skills reflect students' knowledge of vocabulary and concepts.

The second part of the unit plan involves assessment.  In addition to several formative assessments, the unit includes a summative performance assessment.  These assessments connect directly to the essential questions and skills.  Students must apply their knowledge and skills in a novel situation.

To help students develop the skills they need for the summative assessment, the plan also details several inquiry-based activities.  These activities  are chunked according to subtopic to help students better process the information.  Furthermore, the plan explains ways to best meet students' needs throughout the unit.

This unit plan and a concept map are posted below.  To view a larger version of this plan, click on the following link:
