"Comparing Fractions" Lesson Plan

I created this fifth-grade lesson as a demonstration for my Methods of Teaching Mathematics course.  Because students frequently struggle with fraction comparisons, I modeled using fraction circles to scaffold instruction.  The concrete manipulatives promote a deeper understanding of fraction comparisons.  Furthermore, the lesson plan begins with an activity to activate prior knowledge and gradually builds upon this knowledge with increasing difficulty.  Thus, students slowly expand their understanding as they receive the necessary structured support.  Additionally, the lesson plan includes pedagogical tips and extension activities to help all students achieve the learning objectives.
