"Community Helpers" Lesson

This integrated kindergarten lesson incorporates social studies topics into a language arts lesson about concept maps.  After students listen to a nonfiction story about community helpers, they work with the teacher to develop a concept map that identifies the main idea and supporting details.  The lesson entails extensive questioning and discussion to support students' learning.  After creating a word web as a class, the teacher assesses students' understanding through a similar activity.  The students independently create webs by drawing pictures of three community helpers in their own neighborhoods.  The drawings represent one of many lesson modifications that allow the kindergarteners to understand and participate in the lesson.
