Classroom Environment Reflection

This reflection details the ways my cooperating teacher and I established a positive classroom environment by promoting social contact, feelings of security and shelter, symbolic identification, task instrumentality, pleasure, and growth.  These characteristics reflect Steele's six functions.  While we included components of each characteristic in our classroom, we adjusted the components to best meet our students' needs.  As a result of our efforts, our students quickly became involved in the classroom community.

When a student pulls a level, he or she must reflect upon his or her behavior.  The student signs his/her name in the conduct book, lists the negative behavior, and provides one alternative to that behavior.  Unlike punishment, this form of discipline focuses on reflection and improvement.  At the end of the week, students take the papers home so that parents are aware of the any issues that may be arising in class.
