Rural Communities Lesson Plan

In teaching a lesson on community during student teaching, I developed a plan to teach students about rural communities. I began the lesson by showing students photos of rural communities that looked very similar to areas close by. I asked students to compare the photos to see what they all had in common. Students described the things that they saw in the pictures, and I introduced the concept of 'rural'. After the lesson, I read a book about life in the country to students and incorporated a variety of questioning techniques into the reading of the text. As a closing activity for this lesson, I developed a worksheet that asked students to think about their five senses and what they might see, hear, smell, taste, and touch in the country. This activity really required students to think about the topic of rural communities in an original and engaging way. Students also had to respond to a question that asked what the pros and cons were to living in a rural community.
