Professional development is significant because it follows the teacher out of the classroom and into the work environment. It is important for the teacher to remain professional inside of the classroom, but it is just as important to have that same professionalism when a teacher is moving to and from different duties throughout the school day. Professional development is also how one conducts themselves when working with others during the school day. I personally believe this domain is one of my strengths. Some major components of professional development are reflecting on teaching, contributing to the school, and showing professionalism. Reflecting on teaching means that the teacher must be able to self-assess and debrief about what works and what does not. Reflection helps teachers be able to grow and develop. Giving back to the school through coaching or directing is a wonderful way to interact professionally with students and is part of the component, contributing to the school. Most importantly, showing professionalism, means that throughout the day you are making good decisions and acting responsible in and outside of the classroom. Students look to their teachers as role-models and having a professional demeanor will influence them.
