Ancient Greek Culture Lesson

Component 1a

Having a strong knowledge of content and pedagogy is a component of planning and preparation. Having a strong understanding of content and the structure of the discipline is key to creating productive and informational lessons.

While reading the novel, Pankration: The Ultimate Game, aloud to my students we discussed how reading a historical fiction can teach you about culture and customs of civilizations. This lesson was created for students to make culture connections in the text as well as in their Ancient Greek vocabulary. Once they have learned about the Ancient Greek culture they would write a diary entry coming from the main characters point of view. This is a good example of preparation because the teacher had to be prepared to share the quotes from the novel. This included any background knowledge that had to be learned before explaining to the students. Creating the notes on Ancient Greek culture helped the students create a visual connection from the novel, and the teacher reading, to their own personal notes.
