Component 1a: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy

Concept Learning Mapping for Lesson Plans

5th grade

Before creating my lesson plans in mathematics, I created concept maps to organize the learning outcomes the students need to achieve. This helps to see the concepts that will be taught throughout the unit. Therefore going into the unit, it is clear what content and pedagogy I need to make the unit successful. In the concept map, I began with the key learning that students will be able to accomplish as the result of the unit as a whole. The unit essential question is what the students will be able to answer at the end of the unit, and it was provided to me by my cooperating teacher. Next, I looked at the key concepts that students will be learning over the course of a unit in the Everyday Mathematics Book. Some of the essential questions were provided by my cooperating teacher, while I developed the others myself. The key vocabulary is then placed on a word wall in the classroom, so that students become accustom to using the vocabulary as part of their speech. At the end of the map, I am able to see the standards that will be met as a result of the unit. Concept maps are a great tool to plan for large units. When planning concept maps, I am able to see what students already know and what will be new information. This is important to help students build background knowledge.
