Component 3b: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques

George Washington's Socks

5th grade

While reading George Washington's Socks in Guided Reading, students were engaged in a lot of discussions. When students were reading aloud, I paused after about every page to stop to talk about what happened. I asked questions frequently to help students think about what they were reading. All students were involved in the discussions held in class. After modeling to students how to ask questions and think about what is being said in the book, students needed to generate their own questions. Students split into pairs and they whisper read to each other. After every page, students needed to stop and develop one question for that page together. Students created a variety of simple to complex questions for the chapters. At the end of class, we talked about the questions that students came up with and if their question was answered later in the chapter. The skill that students worked on for this novel was questioning and predicting. While reading aloud, I stopped a lot to ask students what they thought that was going to happen next. They then needed to use proof to back up their prediction. These type of discussion techniques allowed for everyone in the class to get involved.
