Component 1f: Designing Student Assessment

Bridge to Terabithia

5th grade

While reading the novel, Bridge to Terabithia with my students, I was constantly asking questions to check for their understanding of the text. After each chapter, students had to answer comprehension questions in their Bridge to Terabithia packet. Students needed to answer more than thin questions, therefore, students were making a lot of text-to-self and text-to-text connections while reading. I stressed to students the importance of making connections while reading. With making connections comes background knowledge which strengthens student's understanding of concepts. After finishing the story, students took a test to assess their recall of information from the novel. In the short answer questions, students are required to make text-to-text connections as well as provide explanations of events from the story. Before grading the test, I created an answer key which has the point value of the questions on the test. The multiple choice were worth one-point each and the short answers were worth three points each. It is important to assign a weighed point value to all questions on any assessment that is graded to ensure that the assessment is reliable and valid.
