Cube Project:  Students will work in small groups to design, draw, and construct a puzzle cube.

Project Parameters:

  • Groups of 4 students in same lab section (3 or 5 with approval of instructor)
  • 3x3x3 overall cube
  • 4-7 individual parts comprising the cube
  • 4-6 small cubes comprising each individual part
  • 1 x 1 x 1 inch small cubes
  • Each group member must sketch, model in Solid Edge, and construct AT LEAST one individual part and no more than two individual pieces (unless you get an exception from the instructor).

Project Deliverables:

  • Sketches (with dimensions) – turn in original and redone sketches with report
  1. 3-view of each individual part
  2. Isometric view of each individual part
  3. Isometric view from 2 sides of assembly
  4. Exploded isometric view of assembly
  5. Sectional isometric view of assembly
  • Solid Edge machining drawings of the items and views 1-4 (with dimensions, 3-view and isometric may be on same drawing) turn in original and redone Solid Edge with report
  • A mock-up of your design made of foam.  – in box in design lab
  • Constructed puzzle cube (decorating is possible extra credit) – in box in design lab
  • A two page typed report (double column format)with the subheadings:
    • Project statement
    • Lessons learned
    • Project management – original and revisited outlines, PERT, and Gantt chart
    • Team member contributions
    • Appendix: images (sketches, Solid edge, photos of finished product)
  • Individual evaluation of your group members

Student Learning   Outcomes:

Upon Completion of this   project, each student should be able to:

1

Design, draw (using paper and design software), and   construct a puzzle cube.

2

Use project   management techniques to plan and implement a team project.

3

Implement the steps of the design process.

4

Sketch an   object in orthographic (3-view) and isometric views to scale with dimensions.

5

Use computer-aided   design software to sketch an object and an assembly, and construct   labeled and dimensioned engineering drawings of both.

6

Use woodworking   tools and techniques to construct a small design project from detailed   computer drawings.
