4C. Communicating with Families

Writing: 5th Grade Newspaper

In my fifth grade student teaching placement, students created informational articles in small groups in order to create their own classroom newspaper to send home to families.  Students worked cooperatively to develop topics in their assigned subject area to write about (math, language arts, social studies, writing, and specials). Students learned about writing to a particular "audience" by identifying the audience that would be reading their articles and by applying this knowledge while writing their own newspaper articles.  Students worked collaboratively to develop appropriate hooks, identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, and why), and develop questions to ask for interviewing purposes.  Students typed and shared their articles on Google Docs so I could combine each group's articles to form a newspaper.
