Using Questions and Discussion Techniques:
4th Grade Reading - Thick and Thin Questions: I modeled, guided, and independently showed students how to formulate high quality questions and to identify high quality questions. Using Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis' text, Strategies that Work, 4th graders created “thick” and “thin” questions while reading the historical fiction book, The Other Side, by Jacqueline Woodson. Students assumed responsibility for identifying “thick” and “thin” questions using a T-chart, then worked in pairs to write their own questions. Students worked together to initiate questions in small groups and to choose their best “thick” and “thin” question to submit at the end of the lesson. This lesson was met with praise by my supervisor, students, and co-operating teacher due to the students' understanding, and initiative, and enthusiasm that helped instill during the lesson! Since the lesson, I followed through by guiding students to continue using this strategy during work in literature circles. In addition, I adapted this lesson to meet the instructional needs of my 5th grade class for student teaching, and continued to follow up on "thick" and "thin" questions in guided reading groups.
