"Emma Rides on the Erie Canal" Guided Reading Lesson

4th Grade Reading - Adapted Guided Reading Lesson: After stating instructional outcomes for the small group of fourth grade students, children successfully sequenced main events from the story, Emma Rides on the Erie Canal, by ordering individual sentence strips independently.  After all students sequenced the story, I utilized a pocket chart to help students check their sequencing.   I adapted and taught a guided reading lesson based on the Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reader, Emma Rides on the Erie Canal.  Throughout the story, students were prompted to recall major events that occurred.  After reading, students worked to complete the sentences describing several main events.  After finishing this worksheet, students individually sequenced small sentence strips that stated events that occurred through the story.  To review answers as a group, students were asked to tell which event they determined came first, second, etc. in the text.  Large sentence strips with the correct order were revealed in a pocket holder for students to compare and correct their sequencing as the lesson progressed.
