Lesson Plan - Flips Slides Turns

4th Grade Math – Flips, Slides, Turns:  In the area of mathematics, I demonstrated knowledge of content and pedagogy by appealing to different students' learning styles and by modeling, guiding, then leading my students through independent work.  In this lesson, I taught the concepts of flips, slides, and turns by directing students to move their bodies to learn these concepts.  I emphasized movement in order to appeal to kinesthetic and auditory learners.  After learning these concepts with movement, students applied this knowledge to geometrical shapes.  Students were encouraged to use pentomino manipulatives to develop and apply these concepts through modeled, guided, independent, and paired work.  This lesson was met with praise by both my cooperating teacher and fourth grade students, who grasped the concepts of flips, slides, and turns along with the concepts’ integral relationships to each other.
