I have been a member of the Elizabethtown College's NSTA Student Chapter for the past four years and president of the organization for the past two years. The mission of the organization includes the following:

  1. Promote the mission of NSTA, which is “to promote excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all”;
  2. Acquaint pre-service teachers of science with support resources available from NSTA;
  3. Provide additional professional development in science education to pre-service teachers;
  4. Design and provide learning opportunities for children in the community;
  5. Promote the teaching and learning of standards-based in science in local schools

The organization had provided a multitude of community service events that has enabled me to grow professionally and personally. As president of the organization, I have also had the chance to organize, plan, and prepare for these community events that are offered to children in the community for no cost. These events not only are beneficial to the children by providing the experience with science concepts but also are beneficial to pre-service teachers by giving them the chance to gain additional experience working with children. These events include the following:

     - Into the Wild (event for children ages 3-8 held once a year)

     - Super Science Saturday (event for students in grades K-8 held once a year)

     - Cloverbuds Science All Around Us (program for children ages 5-9 held multiple

        times a semester in partnership with the Center for Civic and Community

        Engagement and 4H)

     - Science Explorer's Club (program for students in grade 4-8 for about six

        session a semester)

     - Washington Afterschool Program (program for students in grades 3-5 for about

        eight sessions a semester in partnership with the Center for Civic and

        Community Engagement)

In addition the various community service programs and evnets, I had the opportunity to organize a Back to School Supply Drive for a local school as well as other fundraising events.
