The Self-Assessment of Social Work Knowledge Survey
Take a few minutes to complete the following subjective self-assessment of your knowledge, values, and expertise in the following content areas. Do so by rating each of the following items on a simple 0-4 scale where 0=Minimal Level of Knowledge and Expertise, 1=Modest Level of Knowledge and Expertise, 2=Satisfactory Level of Knowledge and Expertise, 3=Superior Level of Knowledge and Expertise, and 4=Excellent Level of Knowledge and Expertise. At the high end of the continuum, an Excellent rating indicates that the individual can proficiently, consistently, and appropriately demonstrate all six levels of Bloom’s taxonomy (i.e., remember, understand, apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate). At the low end, Minimal suggests that the person has limited proficiency on some or all levels.

In an essay format please answer the following questions:
a. What do your responses to the survey suggest about your proficiency in the general social work knowledge base?
I feel that overall, I have a broad knowledge base about general social work, and know information about most topics that were mentioned. However, because of this, I can not say I am an expert in any one area. I feel that this is expected as an undergraduate student, and that I will continue to increase my level of understanding in each area as I continue in school.
b. In what areas do you tend to reflect the greatest proficiency and in which do you seem to reflect the weakness?
I feel that I have the most knowledge in areas concerning work with individuals, being that this semester, my class dealt with social work with individuals. I have not yet taken classes dealing with group or community social work practice or social policy. However, I will be taking these classes next semester and expect to increase my knowledge in these areas.
c. What do your responses indicate about your current social work learning needs?
My responses indicate that I have a general understanding of most areas of social work, but there is still much I look forward to learning. I definitely look forward to learning more about areas of social work that deal with social policy and macro-level social work.
