Statics (Applied Mechanics - Stationary Systems):

 

Equilibria of particles and rigid bodies subject to concentrated and distributed forces with practical applications to the design of mechanical structures. Topics include structural analysis, internal forces, friction, inertial properties and virtual work. Mechanics is best learned by doing mechanics, and that is what we will do in this course. Students will be able to explain the fundamental principles of engineering statics. They will apply these principles to identify, formulate and solve complex-realisticengineering problems. Many problems will require the students to make appropriate estimations and justify all assumptions to define a specific problem statement or design a structure. Students will present engineering solutions clearly in both written and oral settings. They will utilize Matlab to solve complex systems of equations and test alternate designs. Students will work in small teams to solve more complex problems and evaluate the solutions proposed by other teams.
