 Educational Philosophy

I believe that students are able to learn best when they are able to see themselves reflected in the curriculum, when they are given opportunities to engage in discussion and work collaboratively, and when they are provided applicable learning experiences so that they can see the value of education in their everyday life. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to foster these experiences and create a classroom environment that is supportive of my students’ strengths.

I aim to create a community of learners in my classroom by inviting students into a warm classroom environment. When students feel comfortable in the classroom and are nurtured with a supportive classroom environment, they are able to form positive relationships with their peers and teacher alike. Each morning, my students and I take the time to hold a classroom meeting providing us with a shared experience to bring us together. Every student is a valuable member of my classroom, and students’ opinions are respected.

I believe that fostering students’ creativity is of utmost importance inside and outside of the classroom. In my classroom, students are provided with opportunities that allow them to try new things, persevere, work collaboratively, discuss, and create their own meanings. Students are also given leadership roles so that they have a sense of ownership in my classroom.

I encourage students to take multicultural perspectives in my classroom. We do this by promoting discussion and encouraging questions. We are respectful of one another, and we have a desire to grow together. My students not only learn things from me, but I learn from them as well. I encourage them to teach me about things with which I may not be familiar. Each student brings something special to the classroom, and this is welcomed.

In my classroom, we are a community, and everyone is a valuable part of this community. In my classroom, we learn from each other’s differences. In my classroom, we are a family
