Within education, my mission statement begins with creating a classroom environment in which all students feel comfortable, safe, and respected as they develop a love for learning and come to value themselves as individuals. This atmosphere must be established and maintained in order for teaching and learning to take place in the educational setting. While in the classroom, teachers have the opportunity to help students become who they want to be, and learn in an environment in which they feel safe.
The classroom community will honor the diverse needs of each learner and integrate the support of students’ families in the learning process. Diversity will be honored in regards to learning needs, as well as culture. Providing multicultural opportunities in the classroom will build respect among individuals and their differences, but also similarities they may carry. The community will be incorportated into the school setting, and family communication will be an active and important part in the classroom. Using differentiated intstruction when planning lessons will adhere to the needs of each learner, and use their strengths to learn in the classroom.
In my classroom, opportunities will be provided in which students interact with the material, and build connections within the experiences they have. I take a constructivist approach to learning, in which students construct knowledge out of their experiences. In the special education setting, it is critical to provide experiences into which students can build connections, and actively learn.
