Integrated Reading and Social Studies Lesson

As increased demands are placed on classroom teachers and instructional time seems to be decreasing, integration can be an easy solution to maximize time. During my student teaching placement, I had the opportunity to plan a themed day based about our class field trip to a local apple orchard. With all of the day's activities, I needed to figure out a way to fit all of our subjects into the day so the class would not fall behind. In order to maximize my time, I created a lesson that integrated reading and social studies. While the students were practicing the skill of predicting, they were also learning what a good citizen is and how they can improve their community. The students had great suggestions as to how they could improve their community just like Johnny Appleseed.
