As a portion of my special education methods block, I collaborated with a group of my peers to create a mock IEP with a given case study about a hypothetical student. We were each required to complete the role of one professional and collaborate with every step of the IEP process including conducting a re-evaluation. After preparing this mock IEP and conducting a mock meeting, I felt better prepared for my future. After being in the field though, I have become increasingly more comfortable with the process. Having actual students that I work with on a daily basis has helped greatly. After attending four IEP meetings, I have realized that they are more relaxed than I had once thought. Frequent parent communication really lessens the tension as well. The Vista School in Hershey, where my student teaching placement was, makes the process very easy by setting clear deadlines and having a set framework for each IEP. After collaborating with my cooperating teacher to write all six IEP's for our students, I am more comfortable conducting my own meetings in the future.
